The Band fue un influyente grupo de rock and roll canadiense en la década de 1960 y 1970. Conocidos en un principio como The Hawks, sirvieron como banda de apoyo de Bob Dylan durante sus giras de 1965 a 1974, así como para la grabación de algunos de sus discos.
Dado que eran más conocidos como “la banda” de Bob Dylan, su compañía discográfica los rebautizó como The Band, cosa que en principio les desagradó, pero luego terminó por gustarles, pensando que, paradójicamente, era un nombre al mismo tiempo humilde y pretencioso.
En 1976, cansados de tantos años de ir de giras, dieron un masivo concierto final, acompañados de una larga y estelar lista de invitados, como Hawkins, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, el propio Bob Dylan…
Tras dicho concierto, filmado por Martin Scorsese y lanzado como película en 1978, con el título de "The Last Waltz", el grupo The Band se separó.
